Meeting Schedule
The GCRC Advisory Committee (GAC) plays a major policy-making,
planning and guiding role in the GCRC. The GAC consists of
ten to twelve members,
appointed by the Principal
Investigator, on a rotating basis. The GAC is responsible to the
Principal Investigator and is a cross-section of the faculty
members familiar with the broad elements of the GCRC research
activities. Drs.
Martin Blaser and Jonathan Brodie chair the GAC jointly.
The GAC supervises and reviews the operations of the GCRC including
the Core Laboratory and the Informatics Core, sets general policies,
delineates common needs of the Center's investigators, establishes admission
policies, and evaluates projects for Center use. It also reviews and
approves the Data and Safety Monitoring Plans of all protocols using
GCRC resources. No studies are undertaken on the Center without GAC approval,
except when temporary approval has been given by the Program Director
and the Institutional Review Board for urgent studies created by an unexpected
opportunity to study unusual research patients.
The GAC prioritizes projects for Center use to assist the Program Director
in allocating resources: in all cases, NIH-funded clinical research is
the first priority. The GAC is responsible for assuring implementation
of existing NIH policy on the inclusion of women and minorities as study
participants. The GAC is also responsible for the designation of the
category of inpatient research days and outpatient visits for each project
proposed for the Center as Category A, B, or D, including the classification
of research sponsored by industry.
The GAC reviews copies of the research agreements between GCRC investigators
and industry sponsors, itemized budgets, and other relevant correspondence
for appropriate categorization of industry-related projects. This review
includes not only drugs and other therapeutics, but also devices.
The GAC periodically reviews Center operations to ensure that Center
resources are used for the most scientifically worthy projects. The GAC
strives to play an active role in encouraging younger faculty members
to perform clinical research and to assist them in applying its concepts
and methods.
The GAC has formed a subcommittee, the Informatics Advisory Committee
(IAC), to provide oversight over the Informatics Core function: the IAC
minutes are presented to the GAC for approval. It is the policy of the
GAC that the GCRC's biostatistician assist with the review of project
design and optimal approaches for subsequent data analysis for all GCRC
protocols.
Meetings of the full GAC are held monthly and minutes, which detail
the proceedings, are kept.
