The
New York University (NYU)
School of Medicine (SOM)
General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) was one of the first GCRC's funded by the
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)
(grant # NIH/NCRR M01 RR00096) in the early 1960's
and has remained in continuous operation since.
The goal of the NYU SOM GCRC is to provide the clinical research infrastructure
for medical scientists who conduct patient-oriented research.
To this end the GCRC provides inpatient and outpatient rooms, nursing services,
support for routinely-available hospital services,
a molecular biology laboratory (Core Laboratory),
facilities for computerized database management and analysis
(Informatics Core and
Biostatistics Core) and
the administrative personnel,
supplies and equipment necessary to perform high quality clinical research studies
on healthy subjects and patients with disease.
The GCRC encourages collaboration among investigators in the clinical
and basic sciences. It provides an environment for investigations
of the cause, progression,
prevention, control and cure of human disease that afflict individuals
of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. The GCRC also provides a unique environment
for mentored training of health professionals in issues related to clinical,
patient-oriented research. Resources are provided to translate basic
scientific discoveries into new diagnostic and therapeutic methods that
improve health care.
